the Gaming Pipeline - Killer Apps
JewWario and Shuuki discuss console games that really defined specific systems. Games that were most likely purchased because of a system or specifically for a system.
Let us explain. See, there are certain games that were released primarily for one console and was a game that defined that system. Like it or not, love it or hate it... these were the games that you just got. And they were n't always the games that CAME with the system. Super Mario Bros. might not be considered the 'killer app' for the NES... Super Mario Bros. 3 might.
So continue the discussion below. What do you think were the 'killer apps' for the various systems?

I don't believe a gaming system has set games that stand out for each system. To each person, there are games that they love and hate for each system. I love my ps2 and I play games like wild arms 2, etc on it.
I'd say that for PS2, other than FF10, it might have to be be God of War.
I would have liked to have seen earlier systems included in this list. Then again, maybe they are too easily identified, Atari 2600 had Pac-Man and Combat, the NES with Super Mario (Despite being "packaged" in there) and Legend of Zelda, Sega's Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog (Also one of the "auto-included") or Phantasy Star.
I believe a console is used for gamers to just enjoy there games. Yet if I were to name my favorite game I ever enjoyed out of my Playstation. was the Jak and Daxter series. I mean it was naughty dog and I loved the first one yet I will have to go with Jak 2 for the overall dark story and awesome combat and missions the second one had to offer. It still has beautiful graphics to this day. Oh yah by the way Xbox sucks xD. I say ps3 is obviously little big planet I mean its THE PERFECT GAME for anyone. If you dont like this one level well then make your own. Its that simple.
Well... For the Nintendo DS i believe is Nintendogs. But in fact, i purchased mine for the Advance Wars Dual Strike. Is not the best game, but is fun, enjoyable, and i always return to him time and time again.
Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube is one that I doubt any adult Gamecube owner has never heard of. I've only met so many that have played it, but it is infamous for how amazing it is in any gaming community, and pretty much anytime I see someone get a gamecube, they talk to me about Eternal Darkness.
I would suggest two others for the DS.
The first, of course, is Pokemon. It shouldn't be underestimated. In my experience, most people who have a DS and have any interest in gaming culture at large have Pokemon; or at least, have played it and have an opinion on it. For the last few iterations of the console, Nintendo handhelds have been virtually synonymous with Pokemon, so it's hard to single out the DS, but when I see someone playing a DS, one of the first games I would guess they're playing is Pokemon.
The second would be Professor Layton. This is more towards the non-traditional gamer market; I would say that games like Professor Layton, and to a lesser extent Brain Training and its ilk, really sold the DS in that market. If a killer app is a game that sells a console - if it's the game that you always see people take up to the counter to buy with the console - then I think these really do count. We bought my mother a DS with the first Layton game and Brain Training in this fashion.
And don't forget Metal gear solid!
Bonk's Adventure/Revenge for the Turbo Grafx-16. :)
